I read on this forum that a lot of people have trouble with the LC and COUNTRY variables... french canadians like me have this trouble, and others people from mexico or other places, where they have more than 1 language in their country, but it seems that if we choose a country code, the LC variable does not do anything. My trouble: If I want my customers to see the paypal pages in french, I must use the LC=FR code, WITHOUT the country=CA. If I put country=CA, the LC=FR seems to be void, replaced by the english associated with country=CA. If I do not set the country=, it is assumed as FR by default (because of the LC=FR). So when my customer creates its account, the default country that is setted in the combobox is FRANCE. When they change it to canada to enter all their address and credit card information, on the next page, they are assumed to be from canada, so the paypal interface switches to ENGLISH once again, forgetting the LC=FR parameter! Is it possible to correct that ? If we set an LC=XX, we want all the user interfaces to be in that language, not depending on the country=xx parameter, even if the customer chooses another country. I would like to be able to enter my country, address and other pre-filled address informations, but I can't use this option, if I do that the paypal interface language switches to english... very annoying. Thank you.

I think you may have a long wait. There have been people complaining about this very thing for absolutely ages now and I have yet to see any sensible comment from anyone who can actually do something about it. I made my first comment about this very same problem in May 2005!! - I wasn't the first either - and I still have it.

Personally, I've given up asking - what an incredibly poor support service we are getting.

My only consolation is we are likely to be dropping PayPal altogether within a few months, so I really don't care anymore. I'm not saying it is this specific issue which has prompted the decision, but it was ceratainly a mark against them.

I'm also having the same problem.
We have our site setup in multiple languages, (English, Italian, German, etc.) Users of our site login from all over the world not just the country they are from.

quote:

Well said foxtrott. This is exactly the functionality that is needed. There is nothing worse than when someone is using your site in German or Italian clicks through to make a payment and the payment page is in English.

Please anyone else having the same problem reply if there is a solution, or at least so Paypal knows and fixes as soon as possible.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello,

I don't believe that there is a solution to your problem. The reason is that each country site is only available in a certain number of languages. The Canada site is currently available only in English, the Swiss site is in German and English, and the Belgian site is in English and French.

Consequently, the LC variable will have an effect until a country is specific (either because you passed it in your form or because the user has selected a country or because the user has signed in to her paypal account). After that, we will use either the country's default language or (if the user is logged in) the user's preferred language.

There is no workaround, I am afraid.

Best regards,

Merci.

In our case we want the payment screens in English (or the shoppers language of choice), but still when someone selects "Switzerland" for the address it reverts to German. Am I missing something here, as I get the feeling Paypal support doesn't understand the issue fully.

This seems a straight forward bug, since there are many countries with more than one official language, and many people in countries where they have minimal grasp of the language, and it must impact Paypal revenues significantly, especially in Canada / Switzerland / Singapore and other wealthy multilingual places.

In particular I don't think people care too much about contract language, they just want "First name" "Surname" "Creditcard type" etc in their language of choice (which most of the time the web browser is already sending to Paypal).

I was staggered when this issue was brought to our attention that Paypal don't just get it right. The world really isn't that big.

I want to know about this issue also. For instance it seems real weird to me that the first payment page is in english and the second one is in dutch. Also the currencies can not be changed. English buyers might be able to switch the languague somewhere on the page but how can they change it if they can't read it? This seems to be a common problem for many users so I hope someone can help.

seems like they have given up on this issue as it seemt to stem way back to 2005 and earlier --- why no language preference, crazy!

The majority of the Belgian population speaks Dutch though. As far as i have experienced, the default language for Belgium is English; isn't it possible to set the default language of a payment page the same as the default language of the seller? I.e. Dutch or French?

I realise this topic is old now, but for anyone finding this page through a search engine, I may be able to help.

For a Belgian website to default to French . . .

Set country field to 'BE'
Set lc field to 'fr_FR'

The page should appear in French, and a dropdown box should appear at the top right of the payment screen offering English and Netherlands too.

( btw Netherlands is nl_NL )

Before trying, please ensure you delete all cookies placed by Paypal, as it leaves a cookie value named 'LANG' which seems to override.
